When things get sticky and troubling, we scramble to find a solution. It seems imperative that we maintain control over such situations. But in doing so, we often show that we trust in ourselves more than we do in God.
As the Israelites were fleeing Egypt, Pharaoh had a change of heart about letting them go. As Pharaoh’s armies approached, the Israelites began freaking out, complaining to Moses that it would have been better to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert. But Moses replied, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. … The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still” (Exod 14:13-14).
I think Moses has a word for us today! We’re often control freaks who use our genius to find our way in this world. All the time, God is beckoning us to actually trust Him for a change. “Lord, help me surrender control to You. Help me learn to trust in You more than I trust in myself. Help me see your glory as I remain still for a change.”
