Prayer Thought – Faith

I love the account of David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17).  It’s a story of many contrasts:

  • a boy (meaning he is not even reached full maturity of stature) vs. a giant
  • a staff, five stones and a sling shot vs. a javelin and a sword
  • no armor vs. full bronzed body armor and a shield-bearer going before him
  • defends Israel vs. defies Israel
  • the Israelites vs. the Philistines
  • the true God vs. false gods

After young David approached Goliath standing in the valley between the two armies, Goliath began cursing David by his gods.  But David stood his ground and boldly proclaimed, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty. … All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give all of you into our hands” (1 Sam 17:45-47).

And as you know, David wasn’t just talking trash here.  He prevailed and brought Israel its honor back.  It’s a lesson in faith for all of us.  We can’t get discouraged with what our physical senses perceive.  Instead, we must obey the Lord and trust fully in Him.  “Lord, help me walk in obedience and in the knowledge that You are with me in all things.  Increase my faith and help me live a life worthy of being called Christian.”
