As a native St. Louisan, the unrest in Ferguson hits close to home. To say that the violence is troubling is obviously an understatement, yet this is what keeps coming to mind. But my focus this morning is not an image of a burning building. Instead, I think of broken people who search for justice and peace in all the wrong places.
Justice and peace are not things this world can promise. Just ask the victims of the holocaust or thousands of children who die each day due to lack of nutrition and/or medical care. Burning down buildings will never produce justice or peace. These are things that only God can offer. Jesus said, “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matt 11:28). “Lord, help me remember that peace cannot be found in political leaders and systems. Help me to trust solely in You and grant me the peace that only You can offer. And Lord, help me be a peacemaker who can help lead others into Your peace.”
