In Isaiah 58, God addresses the question of why His people who fast are not answered by Him. His reply is that while they fast, they ignore the pressing needs of those around them; people are hungry, without shelter and clothing. On top of that, at the same time they are fasting they are also quarreling, gossiping and fighting with one another. The Lord essentially says, “Go help the people and learn to get along with each other.” Verse 9 says, “Then you will call and the Lord will answer: you will cry for help and He will say, ‘Here am I.'”
Far too often we think living for Christ is about “me and Jesus.” But the truth of the matter is that a life lived for God always involves helping the world at large. We must always be mindful of those God has placed in our paths and strive to help others in their times of need. Furthermore, we can’t live for Jesus and yet fail to live peacefully with others. God’s not a fan of hypocritical living. Living for Jesus ultimately should reflect His likeness! “Lord, forgive me for living selfishly. Use me to help others. Use me to enhance Your kingdom.”
