In Romans 8, Paul says, “Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.” (Rom 8:5-6).
We might incorrectly surmise that an engineer, a computer programmer or a school teacher spend too much of their mental energies on professions that detract from kingdom living. Such a statement misses the mark because Paul is really speaking here of one who gives his/her whole self over to Jesus. Thus, appropriate questions might look like this:
- Are there areas of your life you are prohibiting Jesus from entering?
- Are your goals in life more aligned with the world or with God’s priorities?
- Are you more likely to submit to your own ideas and opinions or to God’s?
“Lord, help me not get caught up in priorities the world is always cramming down my throat. Instead, help me saturate myself in Your Word and keep my eyes focused on things which have eternal value.”
